Windows were a problem for castle builders. To keep the enemy out, the walls of the castle needed to be very thick and strong.

But if there were no windows, no-one could live or work inside the buildings.

So on the outside walls, the windows were very narrow. An enemy could not climb in. It was very hard to shoot an arrow in through such a small gap.

A window like this lets in very little light. Inside, the room would be very dark and cold, even in the middle of summer.
