This is the point at which Malham Beck emerges from the base of the cliff, having vanished underground North of here. Malham Beck does not originate at Malham Tarn, but at another location on Malham Moor, before disappearing underground to resurface at Malham Cove. It reappears on top of a layer of shale, which it cannot sink through, at the point where the limestone ends.
