Kidwelly Castle, Dyfed

Home | Previous

This gatehouse depends for its strength on the two round towers, with the gate between them.

The towers allowed defenders to see and shoot at attackers even when they were very close to the gate itself. The gateway led into a tunnel between the towers. Each end could be closed with doors and a portcullis. There were murder holes in the roof of the tunnel and arrow slits and doorways from the guardrooms on each side.

The entrance tunnel of a gatehouse could become a deadly trap.
