This photo shows the machicolations - the gallery projecting out over the main gateway.

There are three small arches, and under each is a murder hole (sometimes called by its French name 'meutrière'.) Through these holes, the defenders could shoot down, pour boiling water or simply drop large stones on anyone attacking the gate below.
