Chepstow Castle, Gwent

Home | Back

This tower is remarkable for the spurs, the wedges of stonework which project out and down in front of the main drum of the tower. The spurs are there to add to the strength of the tower and in particular to stop its huge weight from causing it to collapse down the steep slope.

Similar spurs can be seen on towers at Carew Castle.
