Castles with a round keep

Home | Menu

Building a round keep required a great deal of skill. The extra effort and expense might be well worth while however if the castle was build on a surface which might be undermined. A round tower is much more difficult to collapse than a square one.

The picture shows one of the best round keeps in Britain, at Pembroke. It is a huge building, 80 feet high. This is the only round tower in Britain to keep its original roof.
