Castle Acre, Norfolk

Home | Menu

Site: North Norfolk. At the point where the Peddar's Way crosses the river Nar.

Main Features:

Begun by William de Warenne in the 1080s. Originally an 11th century manor house defended by earth ramparts, Castle Acre was strengthened in the 12th century by adding a square stone keep and a stone curtain wall.

A new town was begun when the manor house was first built, its streets laid out in a grid pattern.

The picture is of the abbot's lodgings at Castle Acre Priory, which was established at the edge of the new town. These buildings date from the late middle ages, and give a good idea of the standard of living available to the rich and powerful.
