Castles were built with thick stone walls and very small windows. In many castles the windows had no glass.

So it is not surprising that the inside of a castle could be a very cold place. In many castles you can see the fireplaces which were built to try to make them warm.

Often, the fire was the main source of light in a room.

What fuel do you think they used?

Do you think you could see well in a room lit only by firelight?

How good do you think fires like this were at keeping a castle warm?
