Looking for clues - Floors

If you look at the insides of castle walls, you will often see rows of large square holes, about 1 or 2 metres apart.

These holes were for the wooden beams which held the floorboards.

If the wall is high, you may be able to see where the beams for several floors fitted into the walls.

How do you think people got from one floor to another? Can you see any staircases? If there are no stairs, how else might people have gone up and down the towers and high buildings?
