NameMike Wilson
LocationHigh Springs,Florida
Age40
Diagnosed conditionparoxysmal af
Years with condition4
Frequency of episodesabout every 6-7 days
Duration of episodesincreasing to 72+hrs.
Event preceding first AFrheumatic heart disease, aortic&mitral valve replaced 3yrs. ago,had enlarged left atrium, congestive heart failure from 4 weeks of af before 1st e.r. visit
General healthgood health,hbp controlled with med.,work in construction,high school sports,USMC 8 yrs.,drink beer daily
Current stateaf is progressively becoming more frequent and longer duration, ready to try different med.
Triggersstress, hard liquor,af usually creeps up on me about 1-2am while my guard is down, working long hours is sometimes a trigger,it seems af pretty much sets its own schedule.
Preventionsduring awake hrs.,if i feel an episode coming on,i can usually avoid it by relaxing/calming down etc.
Current medications/side effectssotalol 240 mg.twice daily/keeps everything slowed down, doesn't maintain sinus rythym for me,finger tips stay kind of numb feeling, keeps heart rate at 80/90 during af.Also take lanoxin .375 mg. daily, cozaar 50 mg. twice daily for BP.,coumadin 5mg. daily.I maintain a 2.5 to 3.5 INR and have,on occasion,bruise/bleed easily.
Past medications/side effectsquinaglute, did not maintain sinus rythym, used for a year, had loose bowels all the time.atenolol, used 1 month, didnt maintain and made me weak and tired.
History of surgeryHad heart cath. in 96 ,every thing was clear.Had aortic and mitral valve replaced with St. Judes mechanical valves in 98. Had 3 cardioversions along the way.
Future plansI see cardioligist in a month, would like to try a different med.,such as tambocor,tikosyn,etc..I plan on maybe having an ablation of some sort when they get a little more proficient at it in my neck of the woods.I would like to talk to an E.P.
Personal commentsThe biggest problem I have is dealing with all the racket that my mech. valves create when in af. Everyone within 5 ft. of me knows when i'm fibbing,as every irregular beat is heard and felt.Things could be worse.Good luck to all my fellow fibbers!
