NameClive
LocationLondon, UK
Age59
Diagnosed conditionChronic atrial fibrillation
Years with conditionNot known - diagnosed July 2005
Frequency of episodesDo not suffer episodes, it is all the time - except sometimes what could be called worse episodes at night
Duration of episodesVariable
Event preceding first AFNone
General healthGeneral health good; hadn't seen a Dr. for five years; gave up smoking in May 2005; moderate drinker (mainly red wine)
Current stateFeeling moderately unwell most of the time.
TriggersPossibilities thought about so far: hot, humid weather, particularly at night; lying down to sleep, particularly on left side; eating fatty food late at night - e.g. cheese, pate; having one alcoholic drink too many, or two strong a drink - e.g. gin and vermouth - instead of just table wine; stress and worry about work and money.
PreventionsTry to avoid things listed above.
Current medications/side effectsDigoxin and warfarin. Difficult to say because I don't know if some things are caused by AF and some by the drugs. Since diagnosis and medication I have experienced night head sweats; indigestion; feelings of panic; shortness of breath; extreme tiredness, particularly in early afternoon after even a light and healthy lunch; poor memory; a general feeling of unwellness, vagueness, not being quite with it. After my daily 6pm dose of warfarin, I often feel as if my legs are burning within an hour or two.
Past medications/side effectsNo previous medication.
History of surgeryNo surgery.
Future plansWaiting to see a cardiologist in a month's time.
Personal commentsDiscomfort easy to cope with. Not so easy to cope with day-to-day life as I am self-employed and every moment I am not working no money is coming in; I am the registered carer for my disabled partner and we also have his 80-year-old father living with us. I never have a moment to myself.
