General healthfit non smoker - veteran athlete - rower. Borderline cholesterol (6.2mmol/L) before went onto Ezetrol
Current statefrustrated!
Triggersheavy exercise, digestion
PreventionsOnly to avoid overdoing it and no late-night meals!
Current medications/side effectsaspirin,
vastarel - changes energy cycle in heart to glucose rather than fatty-acid
ezetrol - blocks absorption of cholesterol in gut and since reduced cholesterol to 4.5 mmol/L.
I think the aspirin although low dose is irritating my stomach a bit. I also feel that vasteral makes me feel a bit lightheaded at times but nothing serious.
Given rythmol for week and felt like death warmed up, so I stopped taking it. Cardiologist says will only need to take medication if gets to be regular weekly episodes.
Past medications/side effectsnil
History of surgerynil
Future plansHave eased back on exercise to rest for a while - walking only. Trying also to reduce work stress and keep digestion under control, which got really bad after first episodes because of worry and I think triggered two episodes. Although episodes went from nothing to almost weekly in space of couple of months, have not had any episodes for three weeks since eased back and got my digestion better under control. Will simply try to avoid triggers and gently ease back into exercise - in simple terms act my age!
Personal commentsFound inverted T wave in annual medical ECG in early July. Have alwys had sinus bradycardia due to exercise. Started having AF episodes after that, although I suspect had at least one earlier this year during rowing but disappeared during later part of training session. Earlier this year have been doing more exercise than normal in past few years although always have run/row/weight trained several times a week since teens. No obvious heart defects found after tests including angiogram. 24 hr Holter test showed some premature heartbeats. Cardiologist thinks is LAF but always self terminates before I can get to see him. I think is vagal AF as have always had "nervous tummy" which is made worse by exercise and nervous stress, and first episode came after heavy evening training session and late night eating afterwards before going to bed. Subsequent episodes seem mostly related to evening meal digestion issues as triggers in sleep, although one precipitated during resting immediately after heavy mid-day exercise session before eating. Went to hospital and ECG showed AF but self terminated shortly after. Only ECG-recorded episode of AF.
