NameMike
LocationDenver, Colorado, USA
Age44
Diagnosed conditionLone paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation
Years with condition30
Frequency of episodesVaries greatly - once every 6 months to monthly.
Duration of episodes24 hours to 14 days (once). Usually 24 to 48 hours.
General healthExcellent, non-smoker, light drinker. Exercise regularly. Have had 2 echocardiograms, heart was normal.
Current stateNormal Sinus Rhythm
TriggersBending over, intense exercise, getting out of bed.
PreventionsHolding my breath when AF first comes on(usually doesn't work). Nothing else I've tried works to stop an onset.

I have found that vigorous aerobic exercise (jogging, stairmaster, etc.) will sometimes put me back into NSR. It never works right after the onset of AF, but it usually works on the next day or the day after that.
Current medications/side effects1 aspirin per day. No side effects.
Past medications/side effectsQuinidine - did not prevent AF, caused occasional diarrhea.
Coumadin 5 mg/day - no side effects.
History of surgeryNone.
Future plansWait and hope that it doesn't become chronic. I can live with the occasional bout of AF.
Personal commentsAbout half of my cousins on my father's side have AF, so it must be familial in my case.

I feel fortunate that I can sometimes go back into Normal Sinus with aerobic exercise.
