Years with conditionAt least a year, just diagnosed June 2004

Duration of episodesThe last one, in which I went to the ER lasted about 6 hours
Event preceding first AFNothing at all
General healthI thought good health. My cholesterol is 232 but my HDL is high. My cardiologist says that does not matter. I must get it down below 200. I am femail 5' 8 1/2" and weigh 135. I have always been very nutrition and health concious.
Current stateThey admitted me when I went to the ER I was put on Betapace. I have not had an episode since. I feel good .
TriggersI love wine. Wine dinners and knowing about wine has been a real source of entertainment for me. I just went to a new cardiologist yesterday for a second opnion. He says I should not drink at all. THat is hard but I will do it. If that is what is triggering it. He did say it is hard to tell what the trigger is now that I have already been put on Betapace.
PreventionsI do no not know. I feel I always knew when I was having them, my new cardiologist says they may still be occuring in sleep.
Current medications/side effectsBetapace. I read all I could on internet. It scared me but I don;t want to have AF either. I am lucky that so far no major side effects.
Past medications/side effectsNone
History of surgeryNone
Future plansAs I mentioned I got a second opnion and than changed cardiologists(to him). He would not have treated me in the ER by trying to medically cardiovert me becuase of my history of how long I have been having them. That is when the clots are most likely to happen. He would have put me on coumadin than which the others did not. I am going in for a stress treadmill and wear a holitor for 24hours. I was diagnosed by wearing an event monitor.
Personal comments My biggest fear is of a stroke. I also am hyperthroid but my blood levels have alwyas been closely monitored by my internist. I have been on Synthroid for over 25 years. They at first thought that may be the reason but there does not seem to be one.
