General healthvery good health, non smoker, regular sport
Current stateCurrently partially stabilised
TriggersUsed to be stress and sometimes sudden exercise, chocolate, caffeine, now after a meal in the evenings
PreventionsRelaxation helped a little, avoidance of triggers. But this just delayed the onset.
Current medications/side effectsSotalol (1x80mg and 1x 40mg per day), aspitin (75mg).
The Sotalol initially upset my rhythm even more than normal and have me a light headed feel. I nearly gave up but persisted. After 2-3 weeks side effects reduced. Now effects are that it reduces my heart rate from 60 to around 50 and also reduced by BP from 110/70 to 90/60, causing a slight lack of 'get up and go'
Past medications/side effectsBisprolol - limited effect no side effects
Flecainide - some reduction, no side effects
Propafenone - no effect
History of surgeryNone
Future plansTry reducing Sotalol to 80mg per day. May also try Magnesium tablets as recommended elsewhere. In about 5 years time may opt for ablation once this has become a standard practice that has been well investigated.
Personal commentsLooking at this database I must be the only person that has benefited from Sotalol. Up until 3 months ago the AF was a pain as it interferred with the hockey I play. In over half of games I would get AF. I was able to continue but my recovery period from running was extended and I enjoyed it less. I then started Sotalol on the recommendation of my cardio (having tried various other drugs with limited or no benefit). Initially the side effects were quite bad but I stuck with it and these improved. Now, I have been playing twice a week for 3 months with no AF! Brilliant!!
I now only get some AF in the evenings but that has relatively little impact on my lifestyle.
Around the same time I started on Sotalol I increased my cod liver oil capsules to 2p.d. and reduced the glucosamine I take for my joints to 1000 mg p.d., but I don't think this was responsible for the improvement in the AF.
