NameCarolyn
LocationLondon, UK
Age53
Diagnosed conditionAtrial Fibrillation
Years with condition3 years
Frequency of episodesVaries - had over a year between last two attacks and last one was 3 months ago
Duration of episodesUsually a few hours, since medication started, but last two required treatment - intravenous flecanidea nd oral amiodarone worked on these occasions
Event preceding first AFNone
General healthNo major health problems (non-smoker and low alcohol intake)
Current stateReasonably healthy, although overweight
TriggersAttacks wake me from sleep, but no other triggers apparent.

PreventionsDeep breathing used to seem to help shorten attacks and the valsalva manoeuvre seemed to stop one episode in 10 minutes.

Current medications/side effectsSotalol 2 x 80mg daily. Side effects included cold extremities, flatulence, slow heart rate and feeling a bit slow, but these have receded with time.
Irbesartan 2 x 150mg daily. No side effects
Warfarin around 8mg daily. Usual problems with bruising and bleeding.
Past medications/side effectsNone.
History of surgeryNone.
Future plansWait until ablation techniques have improved enough for me to try, or my condition has deteriorated enough to warrant the risk.
Personal commentsIf I had not had private medical insurance my condition would not have been investigated. My one appointment with a NHS cardiologist, for which I waited 6 months, lasted minutes and he told me that I did not need to see him again.

I have been taking chelated magnesium supplements for the last 18 months, which may have helped my condition.
