NameRick
LocationUS
Age51
Diagnosed conditionAtrial Fibrillation
Years with condition16
Frequency of episodesdaily
Duration of episodesa few minutes to hours
Event preceding first AFduring and after exercise
General healthGood,, non smoker, non-drinker, daily exercise
Current statePartial Control with Rythmol, otherwise chronic A=F
TriggersStress, Sudden exertion, Caffine, Cold Drinks, Sleep, Sometimes Anti-arrythmic medications such as Rythmol. Bananas are the worst single trigger of severe events. Have completly eliminated from diet.
PreventionsManaging stress. Predictable routine of diet and excercise. Rythmol seems to help but does not eliminate the problem
Current medications/side effectsRythmol, 3x300 mg each day for four years. Have cut back to 2x300 mg each day due to effects of Rythmol such as bradycardia and PVC's. Lower dose will not return heart to sinus rythem. Non-heart related side effects include, occaisional severe headaches, breathing problems when jogging, memory loss, hair loss, fatigue, loss of muscle tone and joint pain.
Take 1 aspirin - 325 mg - per day.
Past medications/side effectsDigoxen 12 years ago made A-fib worse. Norpace, verapamil, calan, Corgard have been used over the years and none worked. Counadin for short periods after ablation. Discontinued use due to risk of bleeding.
History of surgeryRight side catheter ablation 3/99. This helped reduce atrial flutter. Did not end atrial fibrillation.
Future plansInvestigate left side ablation if it is recommended as effective and can eliminate dependency on Rythmol.
Personal commentsLone atrial fibrillation - no other heart or health problems. I am very interested in the succes rates, risks, and prognosis for a left side ablation.
