Location | San Francisco, CA |

Age | 54 |
---|
Diagnosed condition | paroxysmal atrial tachycardia |
---|
Years with condition | 7 |
---|
Frequency of episodes | once per week |
---|
Duration of episodes | 3-24 hours |
---|
General health | good health, aerobics 4-5 times/week, overweight though, heavy drinker in past but have quit |
---|
Current state | Number of episodes doubling from year to year and getting longer |
---|
Triggers | fatique, extreme hunger or thirst, alcohol, caffein, stuffing my stomach |
---|
Preventions | Holding breath when I first feel heart skipping beats. Can't be sure I would have gone into full arrhythmia though.
Sometimes walking fast when I first feel heart skipping beats will even it out. Again, no way of telling if I was heading for full arrhythmia.
Neither works all the time, of course, or I would never go into arrhythmia.

Current medications/side effects | 40mg nadolol - feel tired a lot of the time, low heart rate (low 40's sometimes)
80mg aspirin
500mcg Tikosyn (started 10/02/02) |
---|
Past medications/side effects | Digoxin - swelled up like a balloon and had vision problems
Cardizem - didn't work and gave me horrible constipation.
Toprol - since episodes continuing decided to change to another beta blocker |
---|
History of surgery | gallbladder removed 5/02; one parathyroid removed 5/01 |
---|
Personal comments | The episodes on Tikosyn seem to be less intense but I am very disappointed in the medicine. My episodes have actually increased since I used to have them approximately every other week. My doctor had told me I might get 2-3 years of complete freedom from episodes. NOT! |
