Namej
LocationHouston TX
Age37
Diagnosed conditionAtrial flutter
Years with condition1.5
Frequency of episodesVariable: Sometimes no symptoms for weeks; then everyday or a few times in a week
Duration of episodesVariable: minutes to many hours
Event preceding first AFNone noticed prior to first event. Have noticed throbbing headache prior to more recent prolonged events. Doctor noticed "large" area of electrically inactivity in atria during ablation and speculates some sort of viral infection may have caused it.
General healthGood. Non-smoker, social drinker.
Current stateOK
TriggersNone specific noticed. Alcohol and/or tiredness may be related but not definitively.
PreventionsSee meds below.
Current medications/side effectsRythmol 325mg 2x/day (started Dec 2008)
Aspirin 325mg 1x/day
Toprol 50mg 1x/day as needed during episode
Past medications/side effectsToprol 50mg 1x/day Jun 07-Dec 07 Somewhat successful in controlling episodes but during episodes gave high heart rates (200bpm), falling back to 90-100bpm on rest.

Sotalol 120mg 2x/day Dec 07-Dec 08 Moderate success in controlling episodes, but less high heart rates during events (120bpm). Tendency during episodes for heart rate to get "stuck" at 100-120bpm for long periods, even at rest.
History of surgeryCardiac ablation Jul 07; Aug 08; both unsuccessful. Second surgery more sophisticated mapping employed and aggressive ablation performed. Reduced symptoms for month after second ablation, but symptoms returned Oct 08.
Future plansTry meds for extended period of time. Wait and see how surgery progresses before trying again.
Personal commentsFrustrating not to be able to say what is the most likely cause.
