AFibbers Database: Debbie J

barhelpup

NameDebbie J
LocationCentertown, Missouri
Age49
Diagnosed conditionAtrial Fibrillation
Years with conditionLess than one (that I know of)
Frequency of episodesSince being diagnosed in 9/07, four episodes
Duration of episodesLast one was 7 days, had third electro cardioversion as a result
Event preceding first AFNone, except I had walking pneumonia in 1/07.
General healthVery good health until this--non smoker, non-drinker, walked 3 miles each day, lost 40 pounds five years ago and kept if off
Current stateFeeling terrible, in sinus rhythm awaiting catheter ablation at Barnes Hospital on 4/30/08. Very anxious and depressed.
TriggersNone that I know of. Twice, my heart has gone into afib while I was in my kitchen cooking or doing dishes. I know my anxiety doesn't help anything, but can someone please tell me how you have this condition and not be anxious?
PreventionsIf I knew how to prevent it, I surely would. Cardizem in the emergency room always calmed down my BP and rate, but only once have I converted without electro cardioversion.
Current medications/side effectsI now take 120 mgs. Coumadin (warfarin), Sotalol twice a day and 120 mgs of Cardizem once a day. Had a horrible rash a couple of months ago that doctors thought was the result of the Cardizem so I went off it. At latest afib episode, the emergency room doctor decided to try it again and I've had no reaction this time--praise God.
Past medications/side effectsWhen first diagnosed, I also took Toprol and Digoxin and a couple of others--when I went to a better cardiologist, he pared down my medications and did my first electro cardioversion.
History of surgeryNone, yet, but have a catheter ablation scheduled for 4/30/08 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis with Dr. Faddis.
Future plansTo somehow try to get my life back. I just became a grandmother for the first time on 3/27/08 and I want to be around for my new grandson and for my family. I'm only 49, but this disease has aged me years in the few months I've had it.
Personal commentsI'm an anxious person anyway, but this has just floored me. I'm no longer the person I used to be. I'm very frightened about the ablation, but with all the reactions I've had to medicines, the bad allergies that I can' treat since I'm a "heart patient" and my constant nausea (nerves and allergies, I think) and the number of times I've gone out of sinus and into afib in just a few months, not sure what choice I have. I will appreciate all prayers and will be praying for my fellow afibbers.
