LocationTyler, TX
Age49
Diagnosed conditionparoxysmal atrial fibrillation with atrial flutter
Years with condition3
Frequency of episodesEvery 3-4 days off medication, every 1-2 weeks on medication
Duration of episodes12-24 hours
Event preceding first AFnone
General healthgood health, active, non-smoker/drinker, borderline hypertension
Current statelearning to live with it
TriggersDrinking cold cokes etc.
Used to drink cold orange juice late a night, frequent trigger.
Frequently starts spontaneously at night while sleeping.
PreventionsI've gotten off of all caffeine, quit drinking cold drinks and tried to reduce stress.
Current medications/side effectsBeen on rythmol 3 weeks, went 18 days with no A-Fib, have had lots of "spasm" like skipped beats last few days, one 5 hour AF episode and one 22 hour episode next day. Also taking a 325mg aspirin a day and COQ10. The rythmol has slowed my resting pulse to 48-52, and limits my exercise pulse rate to about 110. Other than having to scale back the exertion rate, there's no problems.
Past medications/side effectsWas on metoprolol, lowered blood pressure, but didn't seem to help A-Fib.
Was supposed to take tambocor but after 3 doses would cause tightness in my chest and neck.
History of surgeryNone heart related.
Future plansWould like to try ablation sometime, EP MD thinks pulmonary veins may be the problem. Seems to be possible vagal trigger. Will study sites like this.
Personal commentsMy EP doesn't seem to get very scientific about things. Try this medication, then another and so on. The info on magnesium etc. in this and other forums is very interesting.
